Burp­ing your baby for the first time can be a bit intim­i­dat­ing for first time Moms. Many new Moms actu­ally make them­selves think burp­ing a baby is harder than it really is. Read these sim­ple steps and you’ll be burp­ing like a pro in no time.

There are sev­eral posi­tions that are safe, effec­tive, and down­right rec­om­mended for burp­ing your baby.

Burp­ing baby over the shoulder

  • Have a soft towel ready on your shoul­der so that you don’t get messy after the baby burps.
  • In an upright sit­ting posi­tion, allow your baby’s chest to rest on your shoulder.
  • Make sure that the baby’s head and neck are sup­ported by your dom­i­nant hand, while the other hand sup­ports your baby’s back while pat­ting the back to facil­i­tate burping.

Burp­ing baby while baby sits on your knee

  • Allow your baby to sit on your knee.
  • With one hand, hold your baby’s chest and cup the chin.
  • With the other hand, pat your baby’s back until the air is released.

Burp­ing baby in the prone posi­tion (while baby lies face down)

  • You may also burp your baby in the prone position
  • You do this by plac­ing your baby on your lap, face down.
  • Your baby’s stom­ach should be rest­ing on your lap.
  • Ele­vate the baby’s head slightly above the chest.
  • Then gen­tly pat your baby’s back to drive the air right out.
